MEDIA INVITATION
Celebrating the Success of Ladysmith Eskom Mathematics and
Science Education Programme [EMSCEP]
Eskom in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education
will honour 101 Department tutors and six subject advisors
for their contribution to assist learners and educators develop love for
Mathematics, Science and Biology at a special Certificate Awards Ceremony on
Thursday, 23 October 2003 at 10H00 at Monte Vista Casino, 112 Drakensburg Road,
Newcastle.
The Eskom Development Foundation has invested over R5 million
nationally and R244. 000 00 to improve the levels of Mathematics, Science and
Biology for grade 12 learners in the Ukhahlamba Region. A total number of 5 620
learners are benefiting from this grant. A total of 8000 units of Mathematics
and Science workbook for Grade 10 learners were donated to learners from
targeted schools that are participating in EMSCEP. The programme mostly targets
learners in rural schools and will spread its wings in the New Year to other
provinces such as Limpopo, North-West and the Western Cape.
Present at the event will be the National Deputy Minister of
Education, Mr Mosibudi Mangena, who will deliver the keynote address, the KZN
Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Narend Singh, Eskom’s Chief Executive
Officer, Ms Mabel Makibelo, the Mayor of Newcastle, the Reverend BA Dlamini,
Senior Officials of the Department and other dignitaries.
Members of the Media are invited to give coverage to this important event
thereby creating an awareness of the importance of Mathematics, Science and
Biology when learners are making career decisions which will open doors to their
future. On his road show to Dinaledi schools, the Deputy Minister has on
numerous occasions stressed the importance of subject choices. He said that in
order to fly planes on time, control airports, harbours, manage banks and
insurances houses, etc; learners must study Mathematics and Science. He added
that real freedom means being a stakeholder in the economy of South Africa.
